Training Log

After Action.net started as a training log. From 2006 to 2018, every class, match and conference was written up as an after action report and posted here: what was taught, what worked, what did not, and what to practice next. This page is that record, from Front Sight, Tactical Response, Magpul Dynamics, LMS Defense, MDFI, Suarez International, the Lethal Force Institute, MAG and more.

  • 53 classes, matches and events
  • 13 years, 2006 to 2018
  • 46 full reports to read

Why keep a training log

  • Details fade fast. Notes written within a day keep the drills, par times and instructor cues that are gone a month later.
  • Progress shows up. Years of entries show how skills grew and where the gaps are, such as plenty of pistol work and no medical training.
  • The next class picks itself. A log makes it clear what to train next instead of repeating the same course.
  • A record counts. Instructor programs, some permits and some jobs ask for documented training history.
  • Others benefit. Honest, specific reviews help other shooters choose classes worth their time and money.
The four questions of an after action review

Start your own log

  1. Write an after action report within 24 hours of every class, using the copy-ready template.
  2. Keep one entry per class: date, school, instructor, course, location, round count, gear used and the top three lessons.
  3. Shoot a few standard drills before and after a class and record the times, so improvement is measured, not guessed.
  4. Read the log before signing up for the next course. How to Choose a Training Class covers what to look for.

Share your training experience

Took a class worth talking about? Share it in the comments below: the school, the course, the instructor, and one thing that changed how you shoot or carry. Good and bad reports are both welcome; specific beats general every time.

  • Be fair: describe what happened, not just whether it was fun.
  • Leave out other students’ names, and ask before sharing anyone’s photos.
  • First-time comments are reviewed before they appear.
