The Group Goddess competition closed out the November 2009 Babes with Bullets camp just outside Tucson, Arizona: a friendly contest for the smallest group of the week.
The format
- Each shooter fires six shots at a small square of black tape on the target, aiming for the tightest group.
- Speed does not matter; it is pure accuracy mode. Hitting the tape matters less than keeping all six shots together.
- Groups are measured center to center, from the two shots farthest apart.
Coaching on the line
- Hold the same sight picture, press the trigger smoothly, and run six good trigger presses.
- Do not stand there forever trying to make every shot perfect; that leads to paralysis by analysis.
Observations
- Several students produced groups under three and a half inches, including a student who had never fired a gun two days earlier.
- The instructors shot their own round afterward. One winning group put several shots through one ragged hole, and the measuring was as competitive as the shooting.
Takeaways
- A group drill rewards fundamentals over speed and shows real progress at the end of a class.
- Measuring groups center to center turns practice into a score you can track. Try it with the practice drills.
