After Action.net talked with James Yeager at the Tactical Response Force on Force class, held just outside Tucson, Arizona, in March 2012, about who the class is for and what students get out of it.
Course overview
- School: Tactical Response, led by James Yeager
- Course: Force on Force, titled “The Fight”
- Location: Near Tucson, Arizona
- Audience: Anyone who carries a handgun, from police officers to concealed carry permit holders
How the class works
- The class simulates actual gunfights using realistic scenarios.
- About a third of the scenarios are no-shoot situations, about a third call for shooting, and the last third can go either way depending on the student’s choices.
- The goal is to build a mental index. In a real confrontation, a student can draw on a similar incident from training and respond both correctly and more quickly.
Observations
- Force on force training shows the full dynamics of a gunfight in a way that live fire on paper targets cannot.
- The no-shoot scenarios matter as much as the shoot scenarios: knowing when not to fire is half the lesson.
Takeaways
- Anyone who carries should take at least one force on force class.
- Pair it with a live-fire pistol class such as Fighting Pistol, taken the same week.
