Self-defense legal protection is part of the conversation in most concealed carry classes. As part of a nine-part comparison compiled in February 2022, Gun Websites looked at CCW Safe. Plans change, so check the current details before deciding.
What it is
- A membership organization, not traditional insurance and not prepaid legal.
- Founded by former federal law enforcement agents after their own experiences with the legal system.
- Three tiers at the time, Protector, Defender and Ultimate, ranging from about $179 to $500 a year, billed annually.
Coverage at the time
- Available in every state except New York, New Jersey and Washington, and it applied when traveling.
- Paid up front, with your choice of attorney. Attorneys are available once you have a case, not for general questions.
- No stated limit on criminal or civil defense costs, with appeals covered.
- Civil damages and bail bond coverage depended on the tier.
- Expert witnesses, psychological counseling, up to $350 a day for lost wages in court, crime scene cleanup and replacement of confiscated firearms.
- No recoupment if found guilty or after a plea.
- Spouse coverage on the top tier; dependents on all plans.
Limits at the time
- Required a carry permit, unlike most competitors, so it did not cover constitutional carry.
- Did not cover accidental discharges or incidents in gun-free zones.
Extras
- A 24-hour hotline, with limited training and educational material.
How to compare options
- Coverage limits, payment timing, attorney choice, permit requirements, exclusions and price.
- No provider in the comparison published trial counts or success rates.
- The full comparison data is on Minuteman University.
- Legal protection is not a substitute for training. See How to Choose a Training Class.
